The Ballad Of Sam and Molly (J. Fisher)

Sam and Molly kept a still back in the Appalachian hills
Sometimes Molly walked alone along the trails behind their home
‘Til one day upon the sheriff’s son, she stumbled and she tried to run
To warn her Sam of trouble on its way

Enis was the sheriff’s boy, he knew they brewed that soldier’s joy
When Molly fair bespelled his heart, he sought to drive the pair apart
And steal fair Molly for his own, through threat to Sam of whistle blown
He stole upon her that day in the woods

Who knows what a woman might do in her position
Don’t mess with an old moonshiner, high on love and strong on ammunition

Molly swore the next day there, she’d answer his proposed affair
Knowing she’d betray Sam not, she’d keep him from the secret spot
Beneath her dress, ‘tween bosoms bare, where Enis would be unaware
She held a Colt revolver to her breast

Sam chance to drift the next day there, near Enis and sweet Molly fair
Where Molly stood with pistol drawn, her back against the morning dawn
In shadow, Sam misjudged the pair, he missed her barrel’s steely glare
And drew a Colt revolver of his own

Who knows what a man might do in his position
Don’t mess with an old moonshiner, high on love and strong on ammunition

Molly now lies cold and still beneath the Appalachian hills
Tears fall from the sheriff’s face, they’re for a son he can’t replace
And there upon the gallows high, Sam waits upon his turn to die
